Online Level turns your mobile device into a practical spirit level using standard browser APIs and your device's internal motion sensors.
1. Hardware Motion Sensors
Smartphones contain MEMS tri-axial accelerometers and gyroscopes that continuously measure gravity direction and rotational forces relative to the Earth.
2. DeviceOrientation API
When permitted, your web browser reads the device orientation angles (beta for pitch, gamma for roll) in real time without sending data to a server.
3. Smoothing & Visual Display
Our client-side algorithm filters micro-vibrations and displays the bubble position smoothly alongside numerical degree readings and status feedback.

Most modern smartphones do not sit completely flat due to raised camera lenses. Use the Calibrate button on a known level surface to establish a relative zero offset.

A smartphone only measures the plane directly under its small contact area. For long spans or uneven wood, a longer physical spirit level provides wider contact.
Thermal Drift & Cases:

How does Online Level measure surface tilt?
Online Level accesses your mobile device's internal Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) accelerometer and gyroscope sensors through the browser's DeviceOrientation API. It reads your device's angular orientation across multiple axes and converts those values into an interactive bubble indicator and degree readout in real time.
Why does iOS require permission to access motion sensors?
Beginning with iOS 13, Apple requires explicit user permission before any web page can access motion and orientation sensors. Tapping 'Enable Sensors' gives your browser permission to read motion data locally on your device. Sensor readings are processed entirely on your device and are never sent to a server.
Does Online Level require an app download or internet connection?
No app download or installation is required. Online Level runs entirely inside your web browser. Once the web application assets have successfully loaded in your browser, the client-side sensor engine calculates angles locally without requiring continuous internet connectivity.
How do I calibrate the level to account for camera bumps?
Most modern smartphones have protruding camera lenses that introduce a slight mechanical tilt when placed flat. To calibrate, place your phone on a surface you know to be level and tap the Calibrate button. The tool records this offset and zeroes all subsequent readings.
Can I freeze or hold the reading in tight spaces?
Yes. When checking surfaces where you cannot easily see the screen—such as behind an appliance or on top of a tall cabinet—tap the Hold button. This freezes the current measurement and tilt status so you can remove your phone and read the numbers comfortably.
How accurate is a smartphone digital level compared to a physical spirit level?
